The West Midlands is the only region to have a long tradition of mapping the museum scene and therefore to be able to show how standards and services have improved, where and by how much. This began in 1998 and has continued at two yearly intervals ever since.
Although the raw data can be used to measure trends, the information collected is not just statistical. Shortcomings can be identified and addressed, successes can be trumpeted. Evidence can be given in support of increased budgets and to defend services against threats to reduce them. Museums and galleries find it invaluable in comparing their performance with other facilities. And national funding bodies use the information to help them assess grant applications.
