Audio-Visual Development Day

As part of MLA West Midlands strategic work in support of Audio-Visual collections a development day was hosted at Coventry Transport Museum on Wednesday 14 September. This was a well attended event and realised some very interesting discussions that explored what is happening in the sector in terms of AV work, how AV collections can be used and make a difference and what is needed in terms of development to make greater use of such collections and encourage the creation of new sound and film heritage material.

The attachment document summaries feedback from participants. These comments have been used to inform the development of a joint East-West Midlands Regional Audio-Visual Archive Strategy. Work on the strategy is nearing completion and the finalised document will be posted to the website in the near future as part of our consultation process.

Feedback from the AV Development Day identified the following as priority areas:

  • Communication & Information exchange - keeping each other informed of what is going on by establishing mechanisms for the free, fair & open exchange of ideas and activities
  • Technology - having skills and understanding to deal with old formats and awareness of new developments
  • Guidelines & Standards - collection development, care, and copyright. What to do and how to do it, establishing consistency to allow for sharing content
  • Partnership working and the sharing of resources & skills - the limited capacity of many sites inhibits engagement - working together is one way in which individual objectives can be addressed
  • Training - from interviewing and engaging with communities to technical know-how the sector needs to be supported to gain the skills it needs in the modern workplace
  • Advocacy - the assets that AV collections are must be celebrated and promoted
  • Preservation - ultimately we must embed within strategies the means to continue to make collections accessible by caring for them appropriately and addressing the specific needs of sound and film material.
